So, if the backward time machine were to ever be invented by humans some time in the future, we have to assume we would already know about it because someone would have come back to tell us.
But that hasn't happened, so sadly the time machine is never invented.
To me that means one of two things. First is that time travel is actually impossible, no matter how much technology evolves over the next millions of years of human ingenuity.
Second is that we don't get to work on it for so long, because the species is extinguished within the next couple of centuries or so.
I'm not sure which one I find more likely.
